One of the biggest components to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to always have your kitchen adequately supplied with healthy snack and meal options. If you don’t have the proper foods always available at home you are more likely to snack on unhealthy foods that you have sitting around at your house. With that said, here is a list of foods you should always have on your grocery list and available at home when you are in need of a quick meal or snack.

  1. Eggs are a great source of protein, in addition to being a quick and easy fix for a meal.
  2. Chicken Breast or Ground Turkey are another great source of protein. Plan on always having some extra in the freezer, as they are both a good, lean selection of meat to eat.
  3. Vegetables / Leafy Greens will have a varying benefit dependent upon each vegetable - regardless, it is always great to have some available. They are great to snack on and add to any meal while being a low calorie option. They will help with obtaining vitamin A and C, fiber, folic acid, and much more.
  4. Almonds are great to have as a snack, as they are a good source of healthy fat. They also have been shown to help lower bad cholesterol and aid in weight loss, among many other healthy benefits.
  5. Black Beans are another great staple to always have in the house to add to your meals. Besides being a great source of fiber they also aid in helping you receive calcium, iron, and folic acid.
  6. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is great to always have around to help cook meat. It is a great anti-inflammatory, aids in digestion, has cardiovascular benefits, and anti-cancer benefits.
  7. Herbs and Spices are great to always have around to help season meat and add extra flavor to certain vegetables. In addition, they actually have higher anti-oxidant levels than most fruits. Just adding different herbs or spices to each meal can significantly enhance the flavor of any meal without adding extra items high in calories.
  8. Oatmeal gives you a great source of fiber for a quick and easy breakfast meal. It also helps to remove bad cholesterol and fight against heart disease and cancer.
  9. Quinoa is a quick and easy thing to fix up that also is packed with protein and iron. It packs twice as much fiber as most other grains.
  10. Greek Yogurt is one last simple thing to always keep packed in your refrigerator. It's a great addition to your breakfast or your mid-day snack and will help keep up your energy levels. It is packed with vitamins and is a good source of protein.

Check out your pantry and refrigerator now to make sure they are stocked with all of these foods. If they aren't, get them on your shopping list for your next grocery trip. Keeping these items on hand will allow you to always have good snacks and meal items ready to make quickly. Eat Healthy!
